Introducing PerfectDynamics sound optimizations update for Fidelizer Enhanced and Advanced ROM

Fidelizer - PerfectDynamics Sound Optimizations

Dear all Fidelizer ROM users out there who’s enjoying music with better performance. Today I’d like to make an announcement, a big ones. We reached a new level of sound quality improvements with ROM optimizations today.

Back in the days ROM optimizations was heavily focused on DX90 unit and it happens to sound fine with smartphones too so I have DX90 as a reference unit and others seemed to be working fine to some extent.

After focus shifted to DX200, I spent a great length of time and effort to make optimal sonic performance with every firmware change. Sound signature changed with almost every new update according to what my friends and clients told me.

And one day, I tried flashing new DX90 ROM with recent changes from DX200 and I noticed that something went wrong after listening to newly flashed firmware. I realized it’s time to took seriously as I did with Fidelizer software.

iBasso DX100 to DX200 changes

As you may know already that each device has different hardware with different RAM size, different processor architecture or number of cores working. So there’s no specific value for every hardware unit to reach its peak of optimizations.

PerfectDynamics is newly added optimizations based on concept of exact optimal spot for each hardware. If you want to get the best for specific device, it will involve a lot of time and effort to reach that goal.

I’ve been working on this PerfectDynamics project for over 6 months already. I started from sending DX200 ROM updates with different changes and flavor and receive opinions from clients like I did with DX90 years ago.

The key to get ideal transient attack, optimal scale of dynamics and best transparency and imaging is to minimize the effect of OS jitter from system and kernel parameters that are also depend on hardware too.

Some customers told me it has good dynamics and very musical but some also said its depth and imaging is a bit behind SP1000. Next revision has better depth and seperation but lose some energy in dynamics.

I keep working on this DX200 ROM updates for a long while again and again until I get full sound dynamics, intense transient attack, smooth and linear sound, with most transparent imaging for deepest depth revealing every micro-detail.

After long repetitive research and development, PerfectDynamics is the answer. It works like you hire professional display calibrator who’s really good at this to bring the life and soul of movies with the most accurate and faithful tweaks.

However, it’s not just DX200 unit for me to take this long. After finishing DX200 unit, I need to work on Fiio X5iii and DX90 to get the similar result with different hardware and RAM size, ideal devices for my research.

So I’ve finished my research with PerfectDynamics capable of applying this new improvements for all devices. That’s why today is a big important day for such thing like this being possible for every device I can work on.

PerfectDynamics is specific device optimizations so it won’t be available for Purist ROM which contains only generic tweaks that I can put on without testing. Advanced ROM will also have optimizations for PerfectDynamics sound applied more than Enhanced ROM.

Since PerfectDynamics will involve updating all kinds of ROMs for every device, right now only Fiio X7ii and iBasso DX200 has PerfectDynamics sound optimizations applied. I’ll publish PerfectDynamics for Fiio X5iii with 1.1.8 ROM next.

If you’re a believer of bits are bits topology, it’s OK. At least there’s Fidelizer Purist ROM that you can enjoy smoother ROM with some goodies for free. 🙂

I also added a quantum leap optimizations in Advanced ROM for the first time with Fiio X7ii releases. I’ll officially elaborate about these big improvements in details later. Please also check Portable Products for more details about ROM upgrades and hardware modification.

Fidelizer’s next year server

Nimitra server was introduced in TAV 2016 event in Thailand for the first time as an affordable highend server that worked its way to be reach Stereophile’s cover page in just a year. This accomplishment means a lot for products to be released in future.

I started receiving custom version of Nimitra server inquiries right after launching Nimitra and build a few custom units from time to time. This time is quite special with some unique features and has potentials for next year’s plan so I’d like to share the results before shipping today.

Fidelizer's Next Year Server - 1

Fidelizer's Next Year Server - 2

Fidelizer's Next Year Server - 3

This special custom server unit will be sent to our special guest who’s been patiently waiting for 3 months. I normally ship Nimitra and Nikola in 1-2 weeks but this boy needs a lot of research and development for new features so it is actually quite fast.

This is the first single box solution packed with a lot of new features. It’s quite a surprise that I found myself working on custom builds for customers wanting to afford more for better qualities and I’ll have my next custom server in car audio for the first time.

Fidelizer Mod’s inspection for Cowon Plenue 1

I’ve been modifying audio gear for clients in Thailand for many years as a hobby. I figured I should share my research in Fidelizer website from now on so I’ll start the first one with Cowon Plenue 1. I’ll write my past projects in future when I have time.

I received Cowon Plenue 1 from my client for about a month now. He said it sounds quite bland and narrow requiring EQ to make it Plenue more juicy. Now it’s time for Plenue 1 to shine after modifying a few DX200 and X5iii with Fidelizer Ultimate Mod.

Fidelizer Mod - Cowon Plenue 1

Cowon Plenue 1 has quite interesting digital audio implementation. It uses Burrbrown PCM1792A DAC chipset with Wolfson WM8998 audio hub for interface. Before we continue with analog stage implementation, let’s see how PCM1792A works.

As you can see, PCM1792A has balanced output configuration requiring I/V stage for output stage. From our inspection, we found 3 x OPA1612 op amp doing the following jobs.

2 x OPA1612: I/V and LPF stage
1 x OPA1612: Output and buffer stage

The I/V stage will have two small pot for each channel to adjust voltage output. I thought about calibrating voltage output too as I did before with FX-Audio DAC-X6 DAC but the board was put behind display panel so I can’t do measurements during operation, let alone listening.

So I decided to use different opamps with similar specifications from different models instead. Output and buffer stage can be replaced with more powerful ones but I’ll pick ones that won’t draw too much current and retain similar sound signature.

I also thought about upgrading capacitors too but it needs to be very thin so I’ll look around for a while and see if I can find better capacitors to upgrade. I’ll upgrade battery wiring with high quality ones that should keep Cowon sound signature with other internal tweaks.

I thought using dedicated audio hub WM8998 with separated clock will have potentials for upgrading clock modules inside but it doesn’t look like I can find any information about its frequency like I did on Oppo UDP-205 recently (Will post about that later).

I think I can modify Cowon Plenue 1 DAP up to Signature level if I can find any worthwhile parts for additional improvements. For Reference level, I think upgrading opamps alone would be suffice for important parts. He should be happy without having to keep changing EQ now.
